Personal Pronouns, Possessive adjectives and pronouns

 

What’s the difference between possessive adjectives and pronouns?

Possessive adjectives: are used to describe a noun.

Possessive pronouns: are used to replace the noun.

 

Examples:

Possessive adjectives: are always followed by a noun.

My book is green
Your laptop is in the bag

 

 

*In English, possessive adjectives are never preceded by the article like in other languages, and are invariable.

Examples:

My books
Your brothers

 

 

Possessive Pronouns:

Possessive pronouns substitute a noun and prevent its repetition.

Let’s see some example to learn quickly.

Examples:

This is our office This is ours (office)
This is my pen This is mine.
This is my glass This is mine.

 

It is important to learn the difference between personal pronouns, possessive adjectives and pronouns.

* The forms he, she and they are used when a pronoun is the subject of a sentence.

* The forms his, hers and its* is used to refer to possession, belonging.

We avoid using its and one’s as possessive pronouns except when we use them with own:

 

English Rule:

Common Mistakes, In English we say this sentence: A friend of mine and NOT A friend of me. Make sure to remember this sentence correctly.

A friend of mine       

A friend or mine and NOT A friend of me
